  • K&N Air pods

Any experience with the air pod setup on these? The factory intake seems very restrictive, but I don't want to screw with something that is working either.

The factory intake seems very restrictive, but I don't want to screw with something that is working either///////////////////then don't..........actually stock intake flows CORRECTLY in accordance with the motors flow characteristics and exhaust if stock.......

      K&n

One thing that is a tiny bit easier to adjust for with stock exhaust is to replace the stock airbox filter with a K&N replacement like I did and then you only need to adjust for a small amount of increased flow.

These engines because of their intake, combustion chamber and exhaust design can be very hard to tune to other than the stock airbox or exhaust as it messes up the flow characteristics. Apparently Yamaha engineers put a lot of work into tuning everything together, and unless your going to change EVERYTHING (carbs included) your going to likely have fits getting good performance at anything but WOT.

I agree completely. It "seems" restrictive, but I don't want to mess with something that was engineered by people alot smarter than me. I worked in the automotive aftermarket for years, and always stressed that point. The factory spends alot of time & money designing something to work a certain way.

There is allready a K&N factory replacement in it. I'll leave whats working alone...

Most who have made changes, have found that you can't make more power, you can only shift a little up high, at expense of LOT down low, or a little down low at expense of a LOT up high. For racing, losing the down low isn't as bad, but for a street ridden machine that can be really bad.

I put pods on mine mainly for looks and sound. Runs exactly the same as with the airbox as far as I can tell, ie, perfectly from idle to redline I did jet it a tad richer than stock. This is just my experience, not trying to be a contrarian.

It works for some, for many they struggle with it. It's not known why it goes smoothly for many of the ones it does, and in many cases it's not known why it goes so badly for the ones it goes badly for. It is however far more likely to go smoothly with the stock airbox and exhaust. That said, pods with stock or close to stock system often seems to work, as often does 4-1 with stock box, and sometimes doing both at the same time goes really well. It's also possible that you happened to hit the jetting right on, as that is SUPPOSED to be the secret, but it's also supposed to be hard to hit in many cases, but part of the issue is supposed to also be making sure you have enough back pressure in the exhaust system, as it's all about proper balance.
