  • Oil filter: spring and washer

How important is it to have the spring and washer installed with the oil filter? Apparently I did not install them last fall. Fortunately I've only started the bike for short periods of time during my restoration.

I just liberated a spring from my parts bike, but there was no washer. Can I get away without using the washer?

Very important. The spring keeps the filter in position so that the oil goes through the filter. Without the washer, the spring can push though the rubber grommet, again allowing the filter to get out of position...

Thanks Steve. I check the filter from the parts bike and found the washer (I thought was part of the filter).

I found a parts diagram for the oil filter so I can check where the spring in the washer go. The parts diagram shows a ball and a spring and an o-ring in the top of the filter bolt. Neither my bike or the parts bike have the ball and the spring. They both have the spring down in the bottom of the filter bolt held in by at pin. How important are these two missing parts?

The ball and spring are the oil filter bypass (to allow oil flow in case of a clogged filter). If the spring (held in by the pin) is there, it's a pretty good bet the ball is there too...

If you want to check, you can drive out the pin with a pin punch, but it's a real pain to reinstall.

I'd talk to mxmikie about that spin on oil filter adapter. That thing is the bomb. No more oil all over the place changing the filter, easy to find common filter (same filter used by most modern honda's) and if your nervous about it getting punctured jcwhitney has a cover you can put on it to protect it. But it's easy to install, and the thing just work great! I can't sing TC's praises enough on the SOFA.
