Yes, you can still buy batteries with the sensor. However, if you go to an AGM (sealed batery) or look at most after-market units, they will not normally have the sensor in them. The sensor itself needs maintenance; the XJ owner's manual has a bit about cleaning the sensor as part of routine battery maintenance.
I did the write-up when I put an AGM battery in my XJ, and it had no provision for the sensor. One note...the write up indicates a 2K ohm resistor; the exact value is not critical. Going back, I think I used a 2.2k ohm as that is a standard value.Jerry Fields

do the bypass
Jerry and Phil are correct, bypass the sensor,,,nothing is wrong with your battery if you have the sensor unconnected as most batteries do not have it. Do the quick resistor bypass, listed, and it will be fine. BUT, if your battery is a few years old or older,,,,,it may run ok, but be ready to buy another to be safe and also do the resistor bypass, I did it on my xj over 10 years ago to get rid of the annoying red battery light,,,,,,,,,,,Mike in Sun Diegomike
