Unless the bowl has been changed they are 80 style. That said, without pulling the bowls its not possible to tell if they are the early hybrid carbs or not.

I have found that you cannot switch bowls between 81 and other year carbs. The brass tube is in a slightly different spot and/or the hole that the tube goes into in the bowl is shapped differently and moved over slightly.

I hope you found that tool you were looking for.
I thought I wanted to strip mine down but waited and now though it goes counter to what I want to look at I may need to add a back rest and some saddle bags 'cus my girl likes it so much...
But I think I'm going to get a vicarious thrill out watching you trim yours down for one up

thanks, and btw dont go to spark for valve shims any more, they tried to give me the wrong ones and only had 2 of the 4 i needed. if you need some go to iron horse bmw right across the street they have the right ones and any size you need. plus they are cheaper, $3 a piece and you dont even need to give them your old one.

just got my motorcycle endorcement today. I want to get this thing on the road.

I havent done much in the way of looks to the bike lately, work has been hell the past 2 weeks. but i've got the rest of the day off so i'm finishing the valves and putting the cams back in. now just gotta get the carbs done and order a few things.

              to do list.
              -finish valve adjustment
              -finish carbs
-make new airbox or get pods
-make cafe seat/tail(including a new tail light and blinkers)
              -get standard tank
              -fuse box mod
80 xs11 special- pods, kerker, cafe seat/tail, clubmans.

Thanks for the heads up on the shims

Good call on the shims. I got mine online, then had to exchange for the correct ones. after that 2 weeks wasted I lost an pilot jet and went to sparks for a new one and just asked for pricing on the shims.
I hope all went well on the cam pulling. I know I could not wait for the tool either. Mine was off a tooth anyway but I think I will avoid pulling them from now on. careful with the cam chain tensioner they are finnicky in all sorts of ways. Mine leaks a little oil now, the plug is no longer there.
I made a carb sync tool with tubing and a yard stick - they work if you don't want to shell out the $ for some real carb sticks. the only problem I have had with it is the tubing gets soft from the heat and when they do it changes my vac reading, so I stop and trim the tube and check again.
I did not listen when folks here told me not to ditch the air box as I was sick of removing and reinstalling the thing when I had some sticking floats. I have to say it is easier not to have to re-jet a bike. that is my current project on mine. I'm up to 225's on the mains and still lean. reading plugs is bothersome. That said I might trade you mine for something off your beast if yours came without. what I did for filters was take some 1/8" expanded steel mesh and made cut outs that lodge in the stock rubber velocity stacks followed by some uni foam cut outs. I have extra foam I will share if you are interested but then you will be having to re-jet like me. I'm out of the expanded steel but home depot has the stuff for under $10. you might need to re-jet if you go with pods as well. Happy Wrenching!

                    Double checked photo

Looks like you have an air box in the photo. I must have read something into something. Is the one it came with ugly or not functional? For me I took mine off too fast and now I'd rather be riding more and thinking less, but I still refuse to put it back on. Really it's cus I'm stubborn.

                              small update

figured i would update the little i have done since im on.

-got new tail light and licence plate mount/light
-e-bay pods(i know i gotta fix the inlets)

-the valves are all gapped correctly now and buttoned up, along with timing chain adjustment.

-hacked off the last few inches of the frame, new seat pan is half way done with fab work.

progress has been slow as work has been busy, but its coming along. pics when i get home tonight.
