When I did my version of the "fix" the original plug was still present but leaking. That's where I added the dollop of "goop" which required drying/curing before putting on the copper cap with JB Weld. As your plug was gone and you filled the cavity with the JB Weld, I say it's cool. The JB Weld doesn't need air to harden/cure.
As far as removing/replacing the cct I'd strongly urge you (or anyone) to read the following thread BEFORE taking action:

Short version (in my own words...):
Although owners can remove/replace the CCT without incident sometimes things go very badly even though they've "done everything right" according to the known "procedure".
