The original speedo had 27,000 miles, I replaced the original 85 Mph speedo with a 160 Mph speedo, I have put about 3,000 on my ride. So I have about 30,000 miles on mine with out any major engine issues.

I change the oil failfully at 3k, filter about every other oil change.

To be honest I don't know the brand (brain fart). It is the off brand at my local shop. I have to stop there on my way tonight and pick some up so I will post that later.

      It is 20w50 non-synthetic.

I change the oil before and after putting it away for the winter. Sometimes twice when taking it out for spring (get all that moisture out of there). Only months I dont ride is Dec - Feb typically depending on the snow. I give the engine a rotation or two every other week during the months im not riding.

I'm very interested in what people will have to say about how my bike runs this weekend at the lost rally. I know it needs some tuning but has not failed me yet.

        oil changes

I was on one of the oil web sites (non synthetic) and it stated that oil loses 50% of it's viscosity in the first 800 miles , then drops off fast after that. I suppose riding conditions play a huge part as well. I usually ride at around 5K RPM speed around 75 or so. I've 40 k miles on Hermes, mostly highway and change my oil at 1500 miles and replace the filter everytime. When I restored him I hand polished the buckets and barrels, and cam surfaces looking for wear and galling but didn't find anything of significance. Castrol 20/50 non synthetic is all I've ever put in it. No oil cooler but I try to get my rides in during the morning or after supper when it's cooler. Mostly for me, not the bike.

I've seen too many independent testing reports that debunk that. The only ones that claim that oil wears out that fast are the ones who have the most to make from you changing your oil too often. Most of the independent testing reports I have read have concluded that oil except for contaminant levels actually tends to improve with age. The only exception to that is the additives that are in there for the short timeframes where the oil allows metal to metal contact (cold startup etc), and those all showed that at the end of the recommended oil change interval (by the engine manufacturer) there was still more than enough of those to still provide that protection. And now many of the oil companies are finally starting to advertise that their oil still meets the manufactures protection requirements at the end of the oils service life (recommended oil change interval). The way costs for oil are going, I can'pt afford to waste money on changing oil before I have to (while it's still providing the protection it was designed to do). Now their selling recycled oil (well, 50% recycled at least).

My pickup has one of those oil life monitors on it. Last time it I changed the oil on it it said there was still 30% oil life left and I was at about 6500 miles on that oil.

My old 78 standard... got it in pieces and reassembled, replaced and fixed bunch of stuff. Before I got it it did somewhere 80-180-280 kkm... dont know.

Did about 40.000 trouble free km... if you dont count a tranny swap.

Then I got my spare parts bike. 23kkm on the clock. Now it has 38. 2nd gear fix needed and done. Other than that... regular maintanance.

Guy in germany I buy parts from sometimes did about 6-700 kkm with one overhaul. I think his was a 1.1 sport? Not sure...

These bikes are robust and will go all day long and usually should give you plenty of warning when something is on the way out.
Never left me stranded.... OK, this one time a clutch cable broke.... but that doesnt count
If it doesn't have an engine, it's not a sport, it's only a game.
