  • cam chain tensioner leak

the black plastic seal on my xs1100 is leaking. I've already switched the cam chain tensioner with my parts bike and it still leaked and fell out today. i know the plastic is heating and cooling with the bike and probably get worn out. is it common to have to replace them?

Very common. I believe you can still buy them new for not very much $. For even less, you can clean it up and glue it back in with some rtv silicone.

Back in the early days of the XS list, some folks used to grind down a champagne cork and glue that in with silicone. The benefit with this idea was having to use up the champagne.

I took my OEM CCT off completely and did the swap with the self-adjusting, non leaking version:

There are several threads about this. I sold my OEM one on eBay for more than the replacement cost. You could probably do the same..

So, I'm 500 miles from home on a motorcycle trip, and this stopper is gone. I'm thinking of an emergency fix of just squirting some hi temp caulk to block my tensioner.

              Thoughts?

Won't hold..........limited fixing ability on the road, can use a bottle cap and hose clamp it on......that should get the imagination going.
