the black plastic seal on my xs1100 is leaking. I've already switched the cam chain tensioner with my parts bike and it still leaked and fell out today. i know the plastic is heating and cooling with the bike and probably get worn out. is it common to have to replace them?

Very common. I believe you can still buy them new for not very much $. For even less, you can clean it up and glue it back in with some rtv silicone.
Back in the early days of the XS list, some folks used to grind down a champagne cork and glue that in with silicone. The benefit with this idea was having to use up the champagne.Ken Talbot
