Dont know. Its not important. At this stage these bikes are not super collectable. The only reason I like them is because my wife screamed for a good while when I opened the throttle quickly.
Not really its cheap strong and you can use them as a pallette for your own creativity if you wish. I have 4 bikes that dont go and then pleasure is trying to get them to go. The other 2 I just ride. Nothing else matters

the so called long range fuel tank will not just change over from the original 15lt tank.becase
1. the fuel system on the 15 lter tank has different taps. different fuel lines and different vacume lines.
2.15ltr tank has different fuel sender unit.
3.if you have the 23/24ltr tank on you shoud only have 1 fuel hose each side
4.when you have the 15ltr tank you must use 2 fuel lines each side and have the octpuss that all you special owners in the usa have.
a family friend used to own a yamaha shop in sydney and tells me that this was not a YAMAHA option but a option at dealer level.that is why some people have 2 tanks.this is the reason for it not being in the 1981 rh workshop manual that i have.as for bikes being around on dealers floors when the yamaha shop closed in sutherland (southern sydney) they had a yzf 1000 not r1
it was 3 years old and not a demo either.it was cheap but i had the fun police with me so she put an end to that.
cheers
ps have fun with you xs1100s they still do 190klms+ and put the wind up the young guys who are just show ponies

ok i have just looked at both my tanks and ill tell you what is different.the fuel sender is exactly the same, and its in the same place on both tanks.not only are the 2 wires are the same, there green and black and i can plug both tanks straight onto my bikes harness.so he's wrong there.yes my touring tank has different fuel taps(there chrome instead of black and are larger),but they have the same positions as my other fuel taps(on off prime res)are in the same position.they also have 2 lines on each side(which are in a different position to the standard tank)but i just put this tank on my bike and everything not only fits but works as well!i can only tell you about my bike which i just worked on.maybe your friends memory has faded over 22 years.like i said maybe you are right i dont know, all i can say is what i have in my shed.thanks.

how does the vacume work on the taps as the taps need vacume to let the fuel run.and do you have the octupus conected.the fuel sender units for stds and specials are the same size, and have the same wiring, just different inside the tank.i have both.the larger fuel taps that i have have only 3 settings on prime res,my 2 rh tanks have 4 on off prime res.the sport had a opt larger tank.any one in europe got one maybe send a pic so we can see it.do you have any pics of your bike
