  • rotating hollow ticking frt wheel noise

just when i thought i was done, now i can hear a hollow rotating metallic ticking noise from front wheel. im paranoid about jacking the bike up to get the frt off the ground since i dont have a spotter avail. it goes away when i hit the frt brakes. i think im aware of the parts involved, basically the calipers but dont think they would click. if it goes away using the frt brakes it has to be there somewhere. any thoughts/ideas would be greatly appreciated!

just rock it back on centerstand and block under the filter housing. spin front wheel and check things over. May have a wheel bearing going bad....JAT.

I had a rotating hollow ticking noise after getting a front tyre changed. Turned out to be that the lugs in the speedo drive weren't aligned with the tangs inside. Just squashed up against the flange. I lined them up as it went together, and no more noise.
      Hope yours is that simple.

Does it do it when applying the front brakes? If not, your rotors may be slightly warped. There is a small amount of wiggle room in the brake pads. As the rotor spins, the high spot can come around and make light contact with the pads and slide them forward making the ticking sound as the hit the stop of wiggle room. I had this noise on some eBay rotors I was running.

no, the ticking goes away when applying frt brakes. thanx Eveready, the last time it was on the road 12 yrs ago, i had the frt tire replaced and i didnt have it b4 it was replaced. thats why i like doin the work myself, i always know what i did. ill look into the speedo gear alignment, wheel bearing , but not sure if the noise would go away when applying brakes. thanx everyone! any more ideas are welcome. ill take Motomans idea and get it off the grnd for inspection.

A 12 year old tire isn't going to have much stickiness left and you are just asking for trouble driving around on it.

You guys have to remember that that 'six year rule' for tire 'life' was arrived at by testing done in Phoenix Arizona (the US city with the highest average daily temps and the worst-case scenario) and if you live somewhere with lower temps, tires don't 'age' nearly as fast...

its not a consistant bearing type noise, just a rotating tick with pauses while wheel rotating, and hollow. wierd!

ok, raised the frt wheel, spun the tire, and no ticking. it must have to have weight on the tire? still ckg.

Check that the anti rattle clips behind the pads are intact. Mine had that ticking noise for years until I figured out the clips were missing. If it's the same noise then you should only hear it at low speed, as the pads rock back and forth in their slots. At high speed gravity, or some such force tend to take over and hold them still. The clips, if present, should sit in the slots and hold the pads still. It may not be your problem, but that's something to look for.

can u give a decription of the clips. i dont see them on a diagram called anti rattle. where are they in the caliper? is it the flat thin metal piece that goes on the back of the pad where the piston meets the pad? it sure sounds like that could be the issue
