I don't know about all the 80 carbs, but the G carbs have the drain on the bottom not on the side, and ALL of the hybrid carbs with the passage and plug have the drain in the bottom. Some of the late model when getting close to the 81 model year may have actually had 81 carbs with the side drain, but the true 80 carbs have the bottom drain.

The '80-81 carbs are jetted different between the special and standards, otherwise no. The '79 carbs are all the same...

Umm, aren't the slide needles different as well between standards and specials? As I recall, that's part of the reason for the difference in jetting is the difference in the slide needles, which are shorter and fatter on the specials (or something like that).

That's only on the '80 and '81 models and, I think, the XJ.

The '78s and '79s all use the same 5GZ6-3 jet needles with different needle jets for the inner and outer carburetors. I want to say they're X2 series, numbers 301 and 266 but...

so you are saying the inner carbs (2&3) and outer cards (1&4) have different needles?

Different needle jets a.k.a. Mikuni-speak for emulsion tubes.

It gets confusing when they're called needles and emulsion tubes, then someone (like me!) tries to find the parts but Mikuni and the parts department list them as jet needles and needle jets. I mean, it makes sense but it took a while.
