  • Oil rings au go go

I'm likely to have the rings going back in the pistons tomorrow & wonder about the corrugated oil ring. Do I have to do anything with it other than sandwich it in between the thinner two rings? Is there any overlap of the corrugations I have to do, or do the ends simply butt together while I'm inserting the pistons in the cylinders.

And, is there any preferred direction the gap in the rings is oriented towards?

    Thanks.

The ends of the oil ring expander/spacer just butt together with no overlap above the right-hand end of the piston wrist pin.

There is a picture on page 3-44 in the PDF version of the Yamaha shop manual that shows the piston ring positions.

Looking down at the top of the piston with the forward-facing edge of the piston at 12 o'clock:

Top compression ring gap: 11 o'clock
Second compression ring gap: 5 o'clock

    Oil rail expander/spacer end gap: 3 o'clock

Upper oil rail gap: 7 o'clock
Lower oil rail gap: 1 o'clock
