        The discussion is about vileneeds post who lists a 78ephone and a 78sphone in his sig and is the op.

        It's not about the sf which greg does know about. Turns out at least 3 of us are raising the issue.

            Answers.
            1.The forks are not the same but the trees are. I am going to replace the whole rigand then bolt up the brake lines.

            2. The 78 s is just what the P.O. told me it was. It is a conglomeration of parts from a plethora of sources. Hence the non-existant model and also why it is my parts pig.

            3. Why are you all so upset over that anyway?

            4. Where can I get the spanner for the gooseneck nuts?

              The forks and trees need to either both be from a special model, or both be from a standard model. If you mix special forks with standard trees for standard forks with special trees it negatively effects the handling because it changes the rake and trail.

              No now we need to figure out what all the parts are from before you continue. I cant speak to the trees for sure but I can say that if the fork has a leading axle setup then they are from a special. If the axle is mounted to the bottom of the fork then they are from a standard.

                  Well, if you lived closer, you could borrow mine. Both of them. Made from a couple of pieces of rebar, with tapping shoulders on the hook end.
                  Find somebody who is into blacksmithing, or has an anvil and a forge furnace. Took me about an hour to make two of them, after I figured out what wouldn't work. CZ

                    What he said. Forks and trees need to be swapped together or you will have handling problems with the bike, and that may be a reason that the parts pig is a parts pig if it has special forks in standard trees (which if it has different forks but the trees are the same sounds like the case).

                      The trees will go also from parts pig over to the standard. I get it now that just the forks going over is a bad idea.

                      Is there any way via numbers on the engine/frame to tell what parts pig is?

                          Hopefully the trees are right for the forks. It's possible that the forks were put in the wrong trees, especially if the tress don't look different than the ones on your standard, as special trees look a little different, with the clamping bolts being different, if they are the same, you may need to hunt up a set of special trees, and then you will have some issues with mounting your headlight ears (they are not the same spacing). I would be very unlikely to swap special forks onto my standard, mostly because I want to keep my easy to get pads for front brakes. With a 78 I'd consider finding a set of 80 or 81 front forks, they are plug and play but are an upgrade from the stock 78 forks, being somewhere between the original standard forks and special forks but still use the good brakes (this is a relative term, but at least the pads are easy to find and cheap).
