Any bits of advise (do's or do not's) before I start the fork swap from "Parts Pig" over to My main bike?

rebuild the forks FIRST, then swap. That way you start with new seals, etc. DO USE the Yamaha fork seals, as they seem to last a LOT longer than the aftermarket seals. I would also replace the steering stem bearings, as that is #1 cause of handling problems, IMHO.

Awesome. Any tool requirements other than the standard fare?

It's nice to have an impact driver to remove the allen at the bottom of the sliders that holds the damper rod in place. If you don't have one (I have used the hammer type successfully but the pneumatic gun is easier), you can use a dowel or broomstick to jam the rod from above and keep it from rotating while removing and installing.

It sure is fun removing and replacing the fork tube caps. Don't lose an eye. If ya do make sure you get it on video!

Absolutely. So when I disassemble them, they are going to want to expand rapidly? Got it.

I would remove the fork caps BEFORE doing anything else! Just have the forks fully extended, and still on the triple tree, and remove the caps. Putting them back on, press HARD with one hand, rotate backwards almost a full turn, and THEN turn the proper direction to tighten. That is the easiest way I know of to keep from stripping the aluminum, fine threads on the caps.

Curious about that 78 xs1100s. Are the forks on both bikes exactly the same?

There are no 78s models, s models being specials, with 79 being the first year. Additionally, special and standard fork caps don't interchange, and from the posts I have seen, even the air and non-air standard fork caps don't interchange.

Also the springs are shorter on the standard and on the standard the axle is mounted on the bottom ends of the lowers and the special axle mounts 3 or 4 inches up and on the front/top.

Most definitly not intercangable under normal circumstances. Swapping them will change the trailing of the front end.

What are you trying to say? It was a 78s that was being dicussed I thought.

                            vileneeds has a 78 1100s in his signature..............no such thing.......even in Maine.
