  • Piston ring questions

I've read about people grinding the ends of the 1st oversize rings to make them fit in bores that aren't terribly worn & only need honed. Can you also do this with larger oversize rings or only with the 1st oversize rings?

The OEM parts #'s for XS11/XJ11 rings are:

    OEM #3J2-11610-00-00 - normal size
    OEM #3J2-11610-10-00 - 1st oversize
    OEM #3J2-11610-20-00 - 2nd oversize
    OEM #3J2-11610-30-00 - 3rd oversize
    OEM #3J2-11610-40-00 - 4th oversize

Are these oversize rings supposed to fit the original piston where the bore had to be enlarged and using these lets you keep the same piston, just getting larger rings or are they meant to be replacement rings for oversize pistons?

These are meant to be used with oversize pistons, but they can be filed down and used on standard-sized pistons as long as the bore/piston is still within wear specs. There was quite a long thread about doing this, and the answer I got from a piston ring tech was that the 10 over set would be fine, the 20 over set will be 'ok', the bigger sets not so good. YMMV...

Seems to me IIRC that there was an issue with the oil ring too; the new spacer couldn't be used for some reason, you had to reuse the old one.

You still have the problem of the expense of the OEM sets, as about $50 per hole seems to be the typical price. There was (is?) a seller on eBay with NOS aftermarket sets for $40 for all four pistons, you might check to see if he still has some listed...

      Thanks,

I contacted him and they're all gone. Too bad, I could use them right now.

Sorry to be beating this so hard but I doubt you need rings!

          Hi Nate,

My concerns come from my being told the cylinders I have, have concentric rings at the top and that means they have come close to siezing and the pistons likely need to be replaced. If i hone out the cylinders I guess I'll need new rings.

I'm a crash test dummy at this, I don't have the engine rebuilding experience to know what is the best option to do.

finally got it apart, broke a couple of fins because the rust was so embedded that it was held together like glue

First; the reason there was RTV slathered on the front lower part of the engine below the cam tensioner. Whoever put the gasket in broke it, the gasket pieces were petrified in place.

I'll post the photos in sequence. There was no apparent gouges to be seen in the cylinder walls. Nothing uneven to touch. The only denting/impression AI found was on #3 piston which had what looks to be like dents between the top two rings from maybe poor handling in the past? No marks matched it on the walls of the cylinder.

First the cylinders and since all the circumference looked the same, I only took one shot. On the bottom of each cylinder where it sinks into the crankcase there was 004 marked from the maker. Not sure what that means if anything.

            Cylinders

            Piston/cylinder 1

            Piston/cylinder 2

Piston/Cylinder 3 (note dents between rings)

            Piston/Cylinder 4

            Anything notable?

            Thanks

I'm taking the jugs to a 2nd machine shop for their opinion. If this shop suggests rings, I've already looked around for rings and just can't find them except at top dollar which I can't afford. The gent on ebay has no more that will fit or are 1st oversize so if you know where I might look, please post a link or PM me if you have any yourself.

              thank you

Someone correct but doesnt the 750 or the 850 use the same size rings? Would just need a set plus one cylinder to do the 1100. At least it broadens the search a bit.

You're right, Nate. It's the 850. Prices are near the same, or so I've seen in the past. And they're just as rare.

I am just talking that maybe that same guys that has always had the 1st over 1100 rings has some 850 rings as well and just doesnt know that they are the same.
