OK, 12" apes are not much taller than the Special's stock rototillers so I don't see them being much more prone to slipping in their clamps.
But as this string has degenerated into a spirited discussion about appropriate riding positions, here's my rant again:-
Why stop at a hardtail? Go all the way! Rake the frame, stretch the forks, remove the front brake, fit a tiny gas tank with the US flag painted on it,
dress in white leathers, smoke up some dope and pretend you are Peter Fonda.

the handling i find ten times better then the original bars (handling was the biggest flaw in yamaha's design)

inspection stickers are not hard to come by , but your right there are "supposed" to be some on it.
May I ask what size bars you have on your bike in the pics? They look higher than the 12" I was thinking about. Also, does anyone know if you can get bars like that with a little pull back? In other words they would come back toward you near the clamps and then go up so the bars aren't too far forward?

are ape hangers ok?- apes are allowed to post here so i still don't see it not working out for you(maybe not him though)
the bike responds well with the 16" apes i'm running with a hardtail rig, good on corners and acell/decell in all enviroments no drawbacks found
Don't know what they do in your state, but here if they catch them, they impound the bike. Same with no turn signals etc. Missing safety equipment means the bike goes to the impound lot on the back of a flatbed, likely getting damaged in the process and costing several hundred dollars by the time you get to pick in back up, in addition to the cost of the tickets you get in the process, assuming you don't cop and attitude and end up and a free set of new bracelets and a ride.

Do not assume that if your bike is legal in your state, that it is OK to cross state lines where it is not.

In Georgia, your bars may not be more than 15" above the seat.

Amazingly enough, here in the peoples republic of NJ they just did away with MC inspections. I don't know how this plays into the legalities of different mods, but it's nice nonetheless. A tiny bit of our freedom back and it feels good.

They may get ride of the registration inspections but you are never free of the roadside traffic violation inspection, especially if one fails the roadside attitude test that usually precedes the inspection!
