Hi guys, just toying with the idea of medium height ape hangers - say about 12". Would the stock clamps be OK with them? I'm wondering if the extra leverage and the fact that we're working with 7/8" bars would cause a problem with the clamps being strong enough to keep the bars from rotating under stress like hard braking or pushing the bike around the garage. Any thoughts?

Guess if grips aren't higher than shoulders(to be legal in most states).......do what you want......81H Venturer1100 "The Bentley" (on steroids) 97 Yamaha YZ250(age reducer) 92 Honda ST1100 "Twisty"(touring rocket) Age is relative to the number of seconds counted 'airing' out an 85ft. table-top.

Hey to each their own! But if you go and put something like 36ish" apes on anything and literally have your hands above your head (no I am not joking or exaggerating they really are above the drivers head) you are a idiot! Tell me how that is going to handle well in any situation other than straight line, of even then.
Was I saying ANYTHING about your ride at all! Nope, so if anyone is playing ignorant it is you, assuming I am talking about you when I am not.Nathan

"Can't we all get along?" Come on guys, I was just asking if the clamps would hold 12" bars securely. I know they certainly wouldn't help handling. I do like the looks though.'79 XS11 Special, fork gaiters, Uni pods, 45 pilots, 140 mains, ditched the octy, solo seat, T kat fork brace

debauchery - How did you get that to pass Mass inspection? I thought signals were required here in Mass if they were originally on the bike when new? The reason I ask is my cousin has a old CB750 he turned in to a cafe racer took the blinkers off and they would not pass it.

with 12 inch apes no electric or cable mods are needed ,@ 16" your only adjustment is a longer primary brake line (just 1) from the master cylinder to the distribution block. everything else accepts the change easily.
the handling i find ten times better then the original bars (handling was the biggest flaw in yamaha's design)
inspection stickers are not hard to come by , but your right there are "supposed" to be some on it.79 xs eleven special

The XS850 I just sold came to me with 12" apes on it. The PO had added a single SS brake line to the front so it would reach, but left the OEM throttle cable. To allow it to reach teh carbs, it had to be routed in such a way that it was basically kinked at a 90ยบ angle, causing drag. Once I put real bars back on it, everything worked well again.
To answer the OP's question though, the 12" apes didn't have a problem with roation, since they had the knurled spots for under the clamps.1980 XS850SG - Sold
