Assuming that picture is not in normal orientation, yes. You want the timing pointer to ne aligned wiht the C Mark. Also, have the bike on the centerstand, NOT the side stand.

ok, never sen an XJ, but yes, you want the C lined up with that pointer. As long as the bike / Engine is level and not leaning to one side or another.

What pointer? I don't see one. It looks like a cable clamp to me......

Since the XJ has neither mechanical or vacuum advance I suppose that is why it is set up in a different spot.

                Hey James,

According to the XJ service manual, that tab at 12 o'clock IS the timing pointer, it's supposed to have a line in the middle of it, but it's hard to see in that picture.

Got the tensioner changed. What a pita that was. had to file out some of the bottom right side hole to get the bolt in. Turns out that the po stripped the bottom bolt out. I was able to get a longer bolt in there. The old tensioner lock bolt was not engaged. When i removed the tensioner it literally popped out. Now the bike pops at low rpm's when i let off the throttle, On a good note the oil leak is fixed and it was 23c here today.

Hi TC. Aha! I dimmed my screen a bit after reading your post and saw a shadow of a line there. I see the pointer can be altered if the screw holding it (with the yellow on it) is loosened. Not so with he XS11 pointer (is it?).

It's very much adjustable on mine. Just a big arm attached with 2 bolts. Can be either bent or adjusted by loosening the bolts.

Just thinking........... The adjustability of that pointer was for the factory to set TDC. If it (pointer) is never disturbed there is no reason to move it. TDC, timing plate and crank position are non variable. They never change with wear.

I'm wondering then.... if a PO has moved the pointer on the bolts (which would not be noticeable like the pointer being bent) then adjustment of the camchain, and ignition timing using a strobe, would be inaccurate. These adjustments all refer to the pointer as if it's a fixed, immobile reference point, don't they? Just a thought. I just adjusted my cam chain and strobed the timing, using the pointer, without actually questioning whether the pointer was in the right position.

James, if you're not sure you're timing pointer is in the correct position, a dial indicator may be used thru the #1 spark plug hole to find true TDC. Or... you can do it by eye using a soda straw.
