  • Carb clean noob

So I took my carbs off today cuz I got a wild hair up my...(you know what) and I have them completely torn apart. One thing I noticed is that my no.4 main jet had a rigged up washer for it made of something other than brass...is this a part I can find to replace this home made washer or is it fine the way it is? Also I am of course new at this and I scared up the outside of the emulsion tube/needle jet, is this something that I need to replace? Otherwise I did find my gas in the air box problem. No.2 and No.4 seats and needles didn't even close fully and on No.4 the needle wasn't seating at all. Good news is that I am less nervous about this process now and should have it back together by Monday. Also...what is the best way to clean the carb bodies...just spray the heck outa them with carb cleaner? Heard soaking ruins some seal on the butterfly or something. Any tips would be greatly appreciated. My idle mixture screws were very easy to get out except one of the rubber o-rings jumped outa my hand when I grabbed it. Hopefully with luck I will find it tomorrow LOL. Working on a large work bench so It couldn't have gone far but those things are pretty effin tiny.
I will also be getting new tires and doing regular maintenance during this process and hopefully get that beast running like it should. I will keep you XSive's posted.

      forgot about soaking the seals

Regarding the soaking of the seals when soaking the carb bank. If its official carb cleaner, like automotive carb cleaner, it will ruin the seals to soak them. If you use yami carb cleaner or regular pine sol soap straight, the seals will survive the dip.

If you still have the carbs in pieces you can soak the entire thing in water and pinesol. Use a brass brush or plastic to give them a good scrub. Letting them sit over night does wonders. Then just rinse with warm water and use compressed air to dry them. Either way, I consider compressed air necessary while cleaning carbs, everything should get a blast prior to assembly.

In regards to the emulsion tube, you might want to post a pic of it otherwise its hard to give you good advice not knowing the amount of damage... as far as the washer, you might want to see if someone has an extra one they will send you...

Do a search and you will find lots of tips on carb cleaning carbs, best advice anyone can give you is do a little tip searching before you go to work, might save you time and frustration. Also, put your model in your signature so we know without asking, the carbs differ from year to year.

I would hate to start a new thread....

My carbs just got finished being cleaned and rebuilt. The problem is i took them off months ago and i dont remember the way it was hooked up as far as the fuel lines go. I have four lines 2 short and 2 long. Im slightly going to change this to add some fuel filters. Could someone tell me which ports on the carbs go where? I have only owned this thing since feb. and just finished rebuilding, painting, and all the other stuff, and this is my last step to finally see what it is like to ride one of these beasts. Please help

The 2 short lines go on the top barbs on the carbs and then plug into the small nipples in the airbox. The bottom 2 barbs on the carbs are where the fuel lines go.

              Sorry lack of INFO

I have read carb cleaning 101 like 5 times I will put a pic of my emulsion tube on here in a bit and try to get some answers. otherwise i did find a place online that makes brass washers to very specific sizes. so if i can't find one at least i can order one. I just went to 5 innings of the MN Twins game and now I am gonna go back to work. Sounds like I need to get some Pinesol and soak the boddies over night. Thanks for the tips. Also I saw a Forum on here for the appropriate jetting for certain upgrades. Like mine has a 4-1 exhaust system. I wanna put the appropriate jets in for the exhaust upgrade. Otherwise there is a guy who will set up the right jets for you on Ebay if you tell him what model and any aftermarket upgrades you've done to it. Is this adviceable? Let me know. I will keep on the updates. Thanks again for the tips.

A 4-1 isn't enough alone to warrent increasing the jets, if you were going with pods and a 4-1 then I would say yes. I had a 4-1 and a K&N filter and still didn't see a need to increase jets... someone might come along and say different though, it just all depends how your runnin (check plug color). You should be able to make the necessary adjustments with the jets you have...

There is a jetting post on here that gives you a rule of thumb on jetting for mods. Just remember that its only a rule of thumb and jetting requirements are dependent on a lot of environmental factors as well as your bikes mechanical efficiency. I don't know who your contact is on ebay but you wont find any better jetting advice than this forum. If your only mod is exhaust you shouldn't need jetting, most people can get away with turning out the mixture screws enough...
