I would say vertical. Also, I would think that you could disconnect the tube from the carb, drain out a little fuel from the carb and any residual fuel in the tube, hook the tube back on with the other end open and elevated, and that should fill the carb to the point where the float stops it (with a fuel supply hooked-up). Maybe they tell you to run the bike to take care of any differences due to uneven evaporation or in case you hit some bumps on your last ride...or maybe Yamaha knows all about leaking fuel float valves!

          Somewhere on U tube

There is a video showing how to remove the carbs in under 2 mins. Also there is one putting them back in nearly as fast... Ask 3-phase what he called it for a good search...

I'm sure everything will turn out fine using your jig. It just might not be necessary. You have it, so use it.

Planedick, I recall those vids, and who made them. Good info for sure, but as I understand it, the XJ with the stock airbox makes XS11 airbox carb removal and replacement seem like legos.

I've worked on the Standard, Special and XJ, and in my book there is no comparison...

                The XJ airbox sucks!

Not true!! I can have the carbs off my XJ in less than 15 minutes. It take a few extra minutes to get them back on but it's not really not bad.

I'm not saying it's impossible to work on, just that my old hands don't function that well anymore. When it came to dealing with the XJ airbox, my hands threatened to go on strike.
My bike needed jet work when I got it. There was no way I was going to take the carbs off and back on a number of times to get the jetting right, so the airbox had to go.

I like that jig so much that I plan on making one of my own. I have farted around so much trying to make something similar. If you get everything right at this stage it will not be far off when the carbs are installed. The bike will have the same float height running or not and level is level whether it is on the bike or on the moon. Congrats on a cool idea!
