hooked up my fuel lines and had gas dripping out of my petcock and then filled up my number one carburetor float bowl. if I'm not mistaken my diaphragm is suppose to prevent gas flow unless the bike is running, correct?

Yeah, but with specials, the feeds to the octopus are live unless the petcock is switched to Off. Standards should only flow when on PRIME unless vacuum is applied to open the valve.

        specials have 3 shut off's
        1. The petcocks can turn off the flow if they are in the "off" position. In the "off" position no fuel should ever flow. In "on" fuel will flow from the petcock to the "octopus" even if the engine is off. Fuel will flow from the petcocks directly to the carbs when the petcocks are in the "prime" position, bypassing the octopus.

        2. The octopus is a little vacuum controlled valve on top the carbs that is supplied by the petcocks. Fuel should only flow from the octopus to the carbs if the engine is running and the petcocks are in the "on" position.

        3. The float valve in the carburetor should shut the fuel off before the float bowl overflows.

IT is a popular mod to remove the octopus, so your special may not have one.
