  • 1979 XS1100SF color coded wiring diagram needed

Hi there, I am new to this forum and to mechanical repairs in general. My headlight and tach/speedometer lights aren't coming on anymore. I've been searching through this site and I thought I found a wiring diagram that had been nicely color coded for the 1980 XS1100SF but I can no longer find it. Can anyone tell me if they've seen it? Thanks.

Not sure of that, but two places I would start looking at is fuse box, and main switch.

      Hi Levi and welcome,
yeah, I've seen that colored wiring diagram too. Throw enough code words at the search button and it'll hopefully show up.
The headlight/gauge lights only turn on automatically at startup if the alternator is working.
The tach works off the alternator too.
If lights and tach have both quit, suspect the charging system.
If the tach still works, check the fuses and wiring connections.

It's supposed to be cold and rainy on Sunday. (At least it's not snow) I'll make one up for the 79SF. I use the Service manual and colour match the wires as best I can.

If the weather turns sour on Fri or Sat and I can't work on the bike, I'll do it earlier.

Hopefully you can wait till then.

As another fellow with SF wiring issues, I thank you beforehand for going through the trouble of creating the color diagram. If your ever passing through the middle of nowhere, Alabama, lunch is on me!

Thank you all for your help! I was hoping that the headlight/speedo/tach light issue was isolated, but when I started the bike up recently my right turn signal (as well as the turn signal indicator on the dash) wasn't working either. The indicator light on the dash works when the left signal is going. Looking at the wiring diagram I see that there are both a right and left turn signal indicator, but my bike only seems to have one indicator light that is used for both right and left. Is there something that I'm missing here?

Those Clymer wiring diagrams do have a few errors, most of it is right though.

Mr Bill, I looked for those, obviously not diligently enough, before I made mine.

Those look good but mine are...well, ya those look good

The only advantage I have with mine is that I did it in InDesign using layers for the different colour wires. I can isolate each colour. And for a rookie like me and with my eyes, that really helps. I tried to figure out how to get that to work in a PDF, but no joy. Ideas on that anybody?

                          Hi Levi,
most likely what you are missing is that one of those dreaded POs swapped in the indicator console off an XS650.
Not to worry, if it's wired up properly it'll work just fine.
