  • Number 2 cylinder is lean

Finally getting around to doing some serious work on the XJ1100. Bought it in November with 19K on the odometer & I only put around 200 miles on it before winter storage. I'm getting a set of Jardine Spaghetti exhausts prepped & ready to be ceramic coated. When I removed the MAC 4-1 that came with it I found #2 cylinder was running way lean.

I know the carbs were way out of adjustment because the idle adjustment screws on 2&3 had been tightened down as far as they could go. I don't have a compression tester but I'm hoping the valves in #2 are not damaged. The PO didn't put any exhaust gaskets in when he installed the MAC 4-1. Sweet...

To the hopeful, it sure had scary power last year even when horribly maladjusted.

    Thoughts?

Did you pull the plugs, do they agree with the exhaust?

Just pulled them, the order they are is in is 4-3-2-1

      1 & 2 appear quite lean. #4 looks like half&half...

      4 3 2 1

If I remember correctly, they all were black when I pulled the original plugs, I put the Iridiums in right after I got it home.

Thoughts on these as compared to the pipes?

      Thanks!

I would go ahead and clean and tune the carbs then look at the plugs. Float levels and slide operation are critical to a proper fuel mixture. Don't forget to check the valve clearences . All those things have to be right before you can fix a rich or lean condition.
Slow down and enjoy life. If you are in that much of a hurry, you should have left eariler.

What mlew said and put new NGK stock plugs in to tune and sync AND read plug color (after you internally clean up the carbs) with a throttle chop. Then run the Irids if you want.

I did rebuild the carbs over the winter, I now have to make a jig to hold them properly so I can adjust the float level. Even bought a Dynojet kit for it but didn't install it. I also have a carbtune & colortune to get it synced properly.

While I'm waiting for the exhaust to be coated I'll check & replace the shims as needed.

A PO had done a terrible job on it, no exhaust gaskets installed. Two carbs were horribly adjusted. The bolt holding on what was a pristine MAC resonator was loose and the muffler fell off & got gouged (I was going slow so there was only slight scoring). Several bolts were very loose. Sloppy job using liquid tape on the intake manifolds. And much more...

PITA to undo someone else's wrongdoing when they apparently had no idea how to adjust and care for it properly.

you don't need no stinkin jig! just flip the carburetors over remove the gasket and measure that way. that's how its supposed to be done anyways.

Might double check on those gaskets. Oft times they are there but easily dismissed as not, especially the metal clad ones can get crushed in and look like part of the head then you end up adding new ones over old ones.

On those float levels I'm a stickler on the sight tube method which BTW the XJ manual explicitly uses. I always set by measurement first and check with the tubes before install, even my 79. Float levels are never even just by the measurement. When I finish tweaking the measurements are not all the same but the levels are. I might be anal but my fuel levels are even.

He's right, that's the 'official' method... in fact the, that's also the FSM procedure for the '81 XS models. Which makes me wonder... did Yamaha find out after converting to the plastic floats that a simple height adjustment (like for the brass floats) didn't work too well?

No internal differences I can see.... other than that 'bump' for those rubber plugs needed for some '80 carbs.

I have a spare set of 81 carbs, maybe I will put those bowls on my 78 then to check level easier.

Didn't mean to divert the original thread. On the early bowls I use the drilled out metric grease nipples for hose connections.

I found out the reason for the lean #2 anyway; the PO or one of his ilk neglected to put the exhaust gasket in #2 cylinder when he installed the pipes...

Man I hope the valves weren't damaged.
