I have new steering stem bearings and need to install the lower on the steering stem. Obviously it flanges at the end so how are these typically installed - pressing them or beating them in?

Take the inner part of the old lower bearing and cut a slot in it top to bottom. It will now fit exactly upside down on the new bearing and can be used to hammer the new bearing on the stem. The slot is so it won't also get pressed on the stem. A piece of pipe or an old fork tube might come in handy to hammer it down. Don't forget to install the new grease seal before the bearing goes on.2H7 (79) owned since '89

Bearing - not race
Correct - I have the upper and lower race already installed. Want to get the lower bearing on the stem. Thought about a piece of pipe that would fit over the stem and rest against the bearing and then wack it with a rubber mallet to force it down. Concerned I might damage the bearing - any thoughts._____________________

i shouldve read it better,
u can use a piece of pipe but u want it to touch
the inside of the bearing only or as phil and nate stated cut the
inside of the old one and place the pipe over that one
to hit the new one into place.Last edited by petejw; 04-22-2011, 08:11 AM.pete

I stuck my triple tree in the freezer overnight, and then heated my bearing in oil, and then just dropped it on. Don't take the triple tree out until the bearing is hot. Let it sit for quite a while afterwords to let it come back to room temp, the grease with a needle point.1980 XS1100LG Midnight

The lower is supposed to be pressed on, but you can install it with a BFH with a little care. Don't pound on the outer race at all, and put something under the stem on the lower tree so you don't tweak the tree. Don't waste your time with a rubber hammer; a dead-blow hammer would be better if you have one, but the bigger the hammer the better/faster it will go on.Fast, Cheap, Reliable... Pick any two

I used the "old race and pipe" to replace bearings. Works every time, and will NOT hurt the bearing. I bought an 18" X 2" pipe (IIRC) from Ace, and use it to beat on. The freeze and hot will also work, but take care with the new seal!Ray Matteis
