Please Help With My Leak!

By where the oil is there I would be willing to bet that it is all from the cam chain tensioner...

I second that! I had/have the same issue, oil weeps from the tensioner and gets blown back between the fins and ends up looking like the base gasket is leaking. If you notice in pictures people posted of their jugs (giddity), part of the sleeve/jug extends into the lower case making for a pretty snug fit... chances of blowing a base gasket are slim to none as the cylinder pressure never reaches that gasket...search my posts for base gasket and you should find the thread if interested...

Regarding the leaky cam tensioned, I scored a VMax chain tensioned and plan shimming the valves and installing the tensioner all in one shot. Kill two birds with one truck.

Ya I put in a venture CCT and a Tkat fork brace on Hermes today. Haven't fired him up for a month or so. Charging the battery and doing some odds and ends I wanted to check since I restored him but if the auto cct works as advertised, I'll be very happy. That was always a pain in the butt.

The oil doesn't light on fire thank baby jesus. I think my leak is coming from the end plug so I'm gonna grab some sealant and try to seal it up. How hard is that auto tensiner to install? Is there someone I can pm and ask a couple questions so i can get them all out of the way at once?

I would still suggest changing the oil. I personally dont trust the light the stick tests. I think it takes less gas to do damage than it does to light the oil on fire. And better safe than sorry!

If your special is like mine the "octy" has been removed, and will leak if not shut off every time at the petcocks. Only time I don't shut mine off is if going into the store for 5 mins. or less.

I, too, have removed my Octy, and my carbs do NOT leak if I leave the petcocks in the ON position. If you carbs are right, they will NOT leak when the petcocks are ON, but if they do, then your carbs float needle and seats need some attention!

Yeah, Nate, I remember reading somewhere like less than a few ounces in our 3 quarts is enough to thin it to DAMAGING loss of viscosity. Guess that's one of the next mythbuster's type test I'll need to do with some old oil, drain it, and then add an ounce at a time...stir/mix and try to light, repeat with each additional ounce UNTIL I get it to light!? Regrettably I just took my last batch of old oil to the recycling center this weekend after replacing the SWMBO's main oil pan gasket.....was nice..came with 2 tubes of black RTV when I got it from NAPA!

Best comparison I have come up with for our fuel system is your kitchen sink. We all know there are shut ff valves under the sink to turn off the water if your faucet leaks, or you just want to replace it. But you never go under there and turn off the water until it does leak or you are replacing it.

I'm not suggesting you should not turn off your petcocks everytime you park for an extended period of time, just that if all is well it would not be necessary. In our fuel system, the petcocks are basically the same as the shutoff valve under the sink. The float needle valves are similar to the faucet.

yep, its not a nice thing to have a spun
bearing cause of fuel in the oil.

You know, I'm planning on changing the oil this weekend, so maybe I'll try that? But then I actually could go another month yet, and I do have the oil from my last change still, so I could try that oil I'm guessing? I'll get out the gas can and go fill it and try it this weekend and report back (gives me an excuse to refill the M16 lighter that's run out of butane ).

I guess I will add changing oil to the list this weekend. I need to change the oil, plug the oil leak, I think my front brake may be dragging so I need to adress that, I need to do something about it overflowing gas but that will have to wait till I can read more about how to do it, and I need to check a few things to see why my mpg is low. Sounds like a full weekend.
