  • Front brake shim? F model

    In the parts break down of the front brakes a shim is shown.
    (how do you guys up load the parts break down to pit them in posts)

    I goes on the pad that rests against the piston.
    I do not ever recall getting that shim with my brake pads.

    Do the new pads still us them?

    I'm getting a vibration when the brakes are first pressed that is why I took them apart.

    Tough to find them, i had to make mine from flashing stock.
    Former owner, but I have NO PARTS LEFT!

      It's not critical that you have them, as they're there mostly to prevent wear on the piston edge and caliper body. As far as finding them, you'll run into NOS pad sets on Ebay every once in a while that have these, but current offerings don't come with them. More often than not they'll be missing.

      Your vibration problem is probably a out-of-tolerance rotor; if you have more than .006" runout, the rotor needs to be replaced or resurfaced if it's still thick enough.

        Well, for mine, the shims cured an annoying howl. They cock the pads slightly to bring the rear of the pad in contact with the rotor before the front edge of the pad. I tried all kinds of goop, lube, sanding, you name it. The shims cured it. period.
        Former owner, but I have NO PARTS LEFT!

          I've never seen new shims come with the pads. I just move the shims from the old pads to the new ones.

            Well, if the shims fixed a noise, it shouldn't be because the pads were cocked; as soon as the pads wear in, that's gone. They might be there as an insulator though.

            The only XS I've ever seen with a full set of them is my bought-new '78. One parts bike had a pair on one caliper, on all the rest they were missing. I've never seen any on 'other' bikes I've owned...

              thanks for the responses and info.
              I took the brakes apart again and found that I did not have the screw through the pad properly.
              Improper assembly sequence.
              I had replaced the brake pads by removing the 12 mm caliper bolt angling a screw driver to remove the pad screw and lifting off the caliper.
              INSTEAD OF: loosening the 12mm bolt, removing the 2 -14mm bolts then remove the screw 12mm bolt replace the pads.

              When you reverse the order you do not have to struggle with the pad screw and you can see where it goes to get it through the pad.

              This seemed to solve my problem. I'll keep a lookout to see if shims become available if the problem comes back I'll make one.
