        shims

Phil, I went to http://www.crc2onlinecatalog.com/Index_Main_Frame.htm, found the right idle jets, but need to know the size on the main jets, Im gonna get them too. And, I would also like to get new fuel mixture screws, but havent been able to find them on that site, anyone know where I can get just the fuel mixture screw???? Now, we used the method of making a small tool out of an allen wrench, putting it in the slot and rotating the cam. We got clearance to get the shim out, but we cant find a damn magnet with any power to get them out!!!!!! Does anyone have any tricks to get around using the magnet???? We have tried tweezers, and no luck. Thanx for the patience and help guys, I know Im a pain in the ass!!!!!!

PS- As for main jet size, I would like to get everything back to stock, dont want anything for more power, etc!!!

There is a notch in the side of the shim bucket, rotate it facing you before compressing the valve. Pop it loose with a small screwdriver, then use the magnet. JMHO, not necessary to replace all parts in your carbs unless they are worn or broken, it can become expensive.

You really need to be careful if you use a magnet on valve shims. If the shims get magnetized they try to 'stick' to the cam and wear down the lobes.

I just wrapped this up on my engine (valve shims). What I do is to take the base for my dial indicator, similar to the one shown HERE with the green label on it, and turn it on with a small size screw driver on it, this magnatizes the screw driver and then I use it to pull the shim out.

                  Shims removed!!!!

Ok, we finally gotem out!!! And, without a magnet!!! Im in the Philippines, and we COULD NOT find a decent small magnet to get them out. My buddy made a tool out of an allen wrench to use in the slot to hold the valves down. Here is the pic

He took two disposable razors, cut off the heads, ground them a bit, and used super glue to get the shims out! Just used the super glue on the ends of the handles and glued to the shims. Heres the pics

We did the measurements in thousandths. Now, we did the conversions to MM, but wanted a few of you all to tell us if we are right or wrong pleas.

                  Exhaust valve lash- .007
                  Old shim number 290
after conversion, we figured a number we needed 285

                  Intake valve lash- .0015
                  Old shim number 280
after conversion, we figured we need a number 265

Please check and see that we got the right shim that we need! We are getting there, slowly but surely!!! Thanx millions!!!!

                          That should be perfect....

Each shim change is worth .0019" difference in clearance, so that would make your exhaust .009" (right in the muddle of the spec; good to go) and the intake .007" (ditto)...

                            Shims done!!

Ok guys, the shims were replaced today. Wont know if this fixes the miss until next Sunday, coz we have to make a gasket for the valve cover, and my buddy that does it cant be here till then. But, here were the lashes before replacing shims:

                            intake-.0015
                            exhaust-.007

                            After replacement:

                            intake-.006
                            exhaust-.009

The exhaust is dead in the middle, and Crazy Steve, I know the intake is on the low end, and should have been .007 after replacement. My friend that pulled the shims also put em back in this morning, and he made completely sure they were clean, and he says we might gain .001 on the intake lash, coz there may be a little oil keeping the shim from setting in perfectly. Ive got my fingers crossed, will find out next Sunday, and will let ya know. Thanks again so much for all the help everybody!!! Take care, and mabuhay from Liloan, Cebu, Philippines.

                            Randy

PS-Also, my friend just told me that the intake measurent was a loose .006, and that we didnt have a .0005 guage!!!!
