slip-ons?

Has anyone had luck with slip-ons with the stock pipes. What I mean is....will slip-ons for other makes and models work? eg 996 honda superhawk, hayabusa, Kaw mufflers work. Has anyone tried. Since MAC seems to be the only thing available anymore I am looking for other options. Factory mufflers are cheap on ebay from guys that upgraded.

Any tips from anyone that had success or failures is appreciated. If I go this route I will certainly post my findings for everyone else to learn from.

yep many have done this to there exhaust systems,
a few have used harley mufflers as they are apparently
cheap and easy to come by, u may need to get a
bracket to support the muffler/s.

The previous owner put harley pipes on mine. Not sure of what bike. It does need a bracket made from the pipe to.rear foot peg bolt. I can get numbers off pipes and take some pics if you like.

what usually happens is that the mufflers rust out but the headers are still usable.
As the stock exhaust is a weldment it takes a hacksaw to remove the dead mufflers and most times the headers will need extension pieces welded onto where the sawcuts were made to bring the header shape back into round.
Then you get to pick whatever slip-on muffler you like the look of and will fit.
Here's my black manifold painted headers fitted with 1960s Triumph mufflers. I had to ball-pein grooves in the muffler bodies to clear the cast footpeg brackets but the Triumph brackets bolt right onto the stock muffler bolts and they sound awesome.

I have the stock exhaust. It is in real good shape, but I want a high, upturned look. I hope to get a "sportbike" inline 4 sound. I also considered a kerker system for Kaw 1000 and make them fit by bending, cutting, welding or whatever needs to be done.

My goal is to make this bike "nasty". Lower front end, clip-ons. Black it out, cafe style gauges, dual 3.5" headlamps etc. the pic is the look I am going for. I will be sure to post pics once I start the project. I am looking fwd to it.

I am debating selling the stock exhaust and put that $ towards one of the systems in UK.

The Jardines are one of the nicer systems too, although I prefer 4-2 systems but the 4-1's are supposed to be pretty trick as well.

What is the diamater for the stock 4-2 system ....Im looking for slip ons on ebay but dont know the size.

You have to cut the stock mufflers off (unless you have an XJ), and it you cut behind where the stock muffler weld on (into the muffler before it starts to swell with the taper) a 1.75" inlet will work. That's why harley take-offs are popular, as that's the standard size of their pipes. But there still may be some monkey-motion involved with mounts, etc, so they're not a direct bolt-on. Jardine used to make a pair of slip-ons for these bikes, but they're long discontinued.

my system was rusted out too far forward to cut there.
My mufflers broke off of the headers at the point where they were welded on and I had to cut into the irregular shape where the pipes join to get back to solid metal.
The automotive exhaust pipe extensions that I welded on were 1½" OD, the same as the muffler diameter at the original weld junction.
