Has anyone contemplated putting a single mono shock vs. the two coil over’s on an xs1100?

Mono Shock??

It's been done by several forum members, but requires some pretty extensive mods. The OEM swingarm isn't stout enough, so you're talking a new and/or heavily modded swingarm, maybe a new rear wheel/brake, and sometimes (always?) a conversion to chain drive. Do a search for 'mono-shock' and 'swingarm mods'; you'll get lots of hits. Not easy, and usually not too cheap either.
But it is doable...Last edited by crazy steve; 03-10-2011, 12:42 PM.Fast, Cheap, Reliable... Pick any two

I recall there was a guy in the Phillipines that did a monoshock mod as well as an undertail exhaust mod. IIRC he kept the shaft drive at the same time, I don't remember what swingarm he used but it was off another yamaha.Cy

Mono shock swingarm
The guy in the Phillipines used a Virago swingarm. I remember seeing it recently. I don't know the dimensions of the pivot point of the XS11 vs. the Virago. It looked pretty neat though.1979XS1100SF

I ran the R1 shock for awhile, and it worked really well. Here is a link with pics of it on my bike (gen 2).
http://www.xs11.com/forum/showthread...hock+mod+rocks
When I went the cafe racer route, I removed it since I wanted the look of dual rears again to be a little more style correct. The stock R1 shock was a little stiff for my weight (160#), when used on this swingarm geometry. It would fit a bigger guy really well. I didn't use XSchop's mounting method, though. I actually used the stock shock locations, and just modified bushings in the R1 shock to fit the stock mounting locations. If I remember correctly, only the top mounted needed modification. Beyond that, I did have to take a little material off the edge of the rebound reservoir, to ensure no tire contact. I ran this (hard) for about a year, and never had any flex or breakage issues with it, although I did watch it pretty closely. A pretty simple mod that leaves the LH side of the swingarm looking like it is floating--a pretty cool effect.Healthy is merely the slowest rate at which you can die
Some people will tell you that slow is good - and it may be, on some days - but I am here to tell you that fast is better. I’ve always believed this, in spite of the trouble it’s caused me.
