In Clymer, page 66, it mentions a cam chain cavity seal as a step to replacing the head. There was no such animal in there when I took it off. Am I missing something, or does the 80G not use one?

Nope, it is a rubber seal that was originally designed to go around the opening for the cam chain to pass through where the head and cylinders join. Not sure if time showed it was not needed or if it caused more problems than they thought it solved, but it was dropped. Not seen an XS11 engine with it in place yet.Life is what happens while your planning everything else!

Its not that the cavity seal is not needed, it was incorporated into the head gasket is the newer sets of head gaskets.Skids (Sid Hansen)

Do NOT use the cam chain cavity seal when using one of the new head gaskets (part number 2H7-11181-02-00).
This was covered in a Yamaha Technical Support Bulletin ...
