  • Cam Chain Cavity Seal?

In Clymer, page 66, it mentions a cam chain cavity seal as a step to replacing the head. There was no such animal in there when I took it off. Am I missing something, or does the 80G not use one?

No longer used. Ignore that part of Clymer's. Proceed....

Is that part a reference to the point that leaks like a faucet?

I think your thinking of the cam chain tensioner, and yeah that leaks like a faucet often. The cam chain galley gasket in underneath the head and inside in head gasket, if it is still there.

Nope, it is a rubber seal that was originally designed to go around the opening for the cam chain to pass through where the head and cylinders join. Not sure if time showed it was not needed or if it caused more problems than they thought it solved, but it was dropped. Not seen an XS11 engine with it in place yet.

Thanks to all. Hey, the cam chain tensioner rachet upgrade eliminates that leaky unit, does it not?

Yes it does! At least it did on mine. The ratcheting ones can be hard to come by at times, but they are usually relatively inexpensive when you find them.

Vision 550 tensioner. About 3 swipes with a file and it fits.

Its not that the cavity seal is not needed, it was incorporated into the head gasket is the newer sets of head gaskets.

Do NOT use the cam chain cavity seal when using one of the new head gaskets (part number 2H7-11181-02-00).

This was covered in a Yamaha Technical Support Bulletin ...
