  • This wire

Where does this wire go? I am working on a 81 MNS and am not familiar with this wire. It is the one that is marked with the piece of green masking tape. Where does it head off to? The bike has a 79 SF motor in it and several other changes have been made as well. Thanks

It should plug into a bullet connector, red/yel wire to the TCI. BTW, if you're reading the Clymer manual wiring diagram, there is a mistake with this wire, it is labeled black at the solenoid.

Yeah I was afraid someone would say that. I can not find a bullet connetor with that color wire anywhere so far! Looked at the wiring schematics I have and decided I was reading it wrong. I will have to trace that wire I guess until I find out where it all goes.

Ok I was using the Clymers...That would make sense then.

Wiring Harness is part number 4RO 82590 50-00 which is correct for the 81 MNS.

The wiring diagram shows 6 wires to the larger block at the TCI. Is this correct? I have only 5 wires going to the TCI larger block. If the diagram is correct I may be missing the Red/Yellow wire.
Th bike runs good and everything so far works except the starter button. The PO painted the bars so I think that could be part of that problem.

I transplanted an older engine into an 81H frame. Same green wire issue. The bike is fully functional without it as far as I can tell...

Not the exact wiring diagram, but you should see that wire traveling from the solenoid to the TCI. Click to enlarge. The 81 would have a different TCI though.

Had to install the 2H7 TCI to get the bike to run as well. Wonder why there is no Red/Yellow in that area. There is red/yellow at the 4 way flasher and at the fusebox.

Skids i think you may be right but I have to have everything working correctly to verify that. I am working on the painted bars but no luck so far. Once I get them cleaned up I will know if the starter button works.

That wire is for the ballast resistor bypass, the 81 didn't have a ballast resistor, so you don't see the connector in the harness. No biggie.

                          Hey Rasputin,

To keep and use all of the 81's ignition electronics, you would want to transplant the pickup coil/timing plate and such from the bad 81 engine onto the 79's engine, then you should be able to use the 81's TCI and have it run correctly. The 81's TCI includes the cent. adv. in it's timing curve/programming. The 79 doesn't, and so that's why it has a mechanical cent. adv. unit as well as the vac. adv., and so you were getting double advanced timing with the 79's timing parts and the 81 TCI!

Ras, on the later models like the 81, the starter button has its own ground wire wo it is not reliant on a good ground to the handle bars. That is if the right hand switch assy is for an 81 anyway.

The wire you are questioning is not part of the actual wiring harness. My 81s have not had that wire on them.

MY 81 TCI, the 4RO TCI, has four wires into the smaller connector and five into the larger one.
