The pilots on BS34 carbs have both fuel and air.
    True, further out is "richer".

    _______________

I'd check if 1,3 & 4 are getting spark. If not then most likely a wiring issue with the new coils.

      As a side note
2 1/2 turns out with stock exhaust and air box is a lot.
Could be right but most are in tune 1 to 2 turns out.

That sounds more like earlier 78/79 carbs where 1-1/4 turns out is recommended. Where I am here at about 1400ft above sea level 3 to 3 1/4 turns out works for me .

There is no real "set in concrete" setting for the idle mix screws. Too many variables with each motor; compression, valve adjustment, sync, etc. 1500ft. amounts to no elevation really. I'm at 5,000ft. and have run mine 3.5-4 turns out and with a different float level setting have them at 2 turns out and everything from here goes UP before it comes DOWN. That UP is over 10,000ft. also. Also ran mine 10yrs. from new at 6,500ft. elev. and UP jsut the way it was when I rode it off the showroom floor. It ran perfect ALL the time back then, but there's something to be said for the fuel then too. Set fuel mixture warmed up from riding by "ear". Ken Talbot's "how to" may be of help for you. With the YICS setting the idle mix and sync. is a bit of a pain, but your scoot will thank you for it in performance.

            Question on the original subject

Which coils did you get? If they are the green ones (which are very common)then they are 3 ohm impedance coils. You will need to remove the ballast resistor with these or you will get a very weak spark that can make your bike act exactly like what you say.

Once you un-can a can of worms, the only way to re-can them is with a bigger can.

he has an XJ, no resistor to remove.
