hooked up a new set today on my xj and is only firing on #2,#1 #3 #4 are wet. where did i go wrong. thanks in advance

It is starting and running though? If so I would first look and make sure all the plug wire connections are good and then I would move to the carbs. How was it running prior to the coil swap.

Could be you swapped the feed wires for the coils. DAMHIKIJK

You have one orange and one gray, try swapping them.

I did the same thing with my Accels when I first plugged them in. I just swapped the plug wires from one coil to the other, and it fired right up.

Sounds right. Just make sure your connections are good . The fouled plugs can be because you're carb idle jets need to be leaned out . How many turns out do you have those screws?
Give your plugs a good cleaning and start it up again.

You should state your model and yr in your signature. If you have late model 80/81 carbs then you might want to go one more turn out on the idle jet screws.

I missed the XJ my bad. Well it's still a good idea to post it in your signature.

3 to 3.5 turns out is a good start any less may cause a rich condition.

Umm, more turns out is richer. Turned in is leaner, turned out is richer, these are fuel mixture screws not air mixture screws. Easy way to tell which they are, if they are between the diaphragm and the engine it's fuel, if they are on the other side of the diaphragm/ main jets it's air. Air gets leaner as you open them, fuel gets richer as you open them.

Thanks cywelchjr I don't know how I mixed that up, meant lean but said rich. I found it strange bcknblkbird carbs seemed to be too rich and I meant to direct him to lean out his carbs. But that being said at 2 1/2 turns out seems to be too rich where he should be on the lean side, that's where I was going. Thanks for again for clearing that up, too many "Tall Boy Canadian" beers tonight I guess .
