  • Shorai Battery review with pics

I got this battery for my VTR cafe build, but I am really thinking about getting one for the XS1100 as well. Member Fix researched it and has determined that the Shorai battery for the 1100 is 13 lbs lighter than the stock unit. It is lithium iron phosphate, and has no liquid inside at all.
I ordered a 14 ah 210 cca battery for the VTR, since turning the 1000 twin over is really difficult when cold or very warm. I installed it last night and tried it, and results are better than expected. It turns over better with the Shorai than with the old Yuasa lead acid. And only weighs 1.5 lbs! We are always looking for ways to save weight on these old girls, so we thought this might be a way to help everyone out. Check out the shorai site here:

For those that notice, polarity was not an issue for me, since I can mount the battery any direction on this build. The batteries come in either polarity configuration.

Pretty interesting, but the price!! At almost $190 for a XS-specific battery, that'll buy at least three conventional batteries...

True, but when they last up to twice as long, some of the value is added back in. And no one said weight savings/ performance was cheap!

Nope, it's basically the most expensive thing to fix on any vehicle when you look at the cost to benefit ratio!

Although I would venture that the battery I put in the VTR would crank the 1100 over just fine. It was $140, so not on the extreme end of things.

I guess it all boils down to how seriously you want to pursue this kind of thing. I am fascinated by the effects of weight loss, suspension, and the like over simple horsepower increases. Hence the return on things like the lighter battery have a much more significant "value" than they might to the next guy.

I don't know if I would go so far as to say "cost to benefit" ratio as "cost to necessity" ratio. Weight loss can be hugely beneficial in most applications, but is usually not a requirement (at least with bikes.....people are another story!)

Ah, he gets to the crux of the issue! Keep spending buck$ to get a lighter battery, shave down the rotors, eliminate wiress you don't need, unbolt stuff that is not being used; or, push back from the dinner plate and get out for some reular exercise. IIRC, a pound of weight is a pound of weight, no matter where it is sitting on the bike! (not even trying to hint that Tsunami's performance would not not benefit from a bit more of the latter... )

True enough! Fortunately for me, I do not have much pushing back from the plate I can do, or I lack the gravitational advantage to stay on the seat with my new found speed!
So I focus on the bike itself!
