ok guys i am new to the site and already have a question. just bought a 1979 xs 1100 with what i thought was a dog type problem. now after opening up the trans i cant find the problem.everything looks normal no sign of trouble. but something is wrong ! in neutral with clutch basket removed the rear wheel spins with the trans gears. i tried to use the kick starter but again the rear wheel spins ( the bike is upside down with the pan off ) PLEASE WHAT AM I MISSING ? ANYONE HAVE ANY IDEAS ? thanks for any help .

Better pull that shaft assembly and do the dremal back-cut on the gear dogs. Engagement isn't much and the slight wear on edge of dogs isn't much. If you have gear engagement, but jumps/ratchets under a load.............better fix while its apart.......otherwise you WILL be doing this again.

TC Gresham has a pictorial step by step procedure written up in the repairs section under transmissions. It is so good it is almost fool proof. I used it when I did mine a couple of years ago.

How do you KNOW it's in neutral? Have you taken the shift pawl cover off? There is a funky washer that holds a few pins in there. As the shift pawl is dragged across the pins, it turns the shift drum one "notch" at a time. Neutral is 1/2 a notch up from 1st gear. When in neutral, and the rear wheel spinning, the gears WILL turn, but not engage with the engine.

My bike is still upside down, so this stuff is still kind of fresh. My bike was occasionally popping out of first gear and had just started to slip out of second. By looking at the dogs, I wouldn't notice anything wrong if I didn't know exactly what to look for.

I chose to replace the gears with new ones and I performed the "washer move". Unfortunately, due to my schedule it will be the end of next month before I can complete the job.

It does not take much, what may seem like normal wear may be enough to cause the problem.

This is normal and how it should be. Once you pull the clutch basket off, there is no longer any connection form the "engine" or crankshaft and primary shaft connected by the HYVO chain to the transmission. So it is just like having the bike in Neutral, no matter what gear is selected. Rear wheel spins, as does the middle drive and all the transmission shafts (depending what gear your in again). You do want the bike in 4th gear when you pull the trans gears out.

              more questions about trans

I want to thank all that have replied. Now one more question....going by the manual and by the pictures of the trans on this site the trans and the shift drum all appear to be right for neutral, but with the clutch drum in place clutches not bolted down tight, there is limited movement of the rear wheel. No more than a few inches forward or back. it seems like it is in gear. What the h#^^ is the deal ? Thanks again for any help. If i can't fix it i will be selling parts !

Az-XsRider, maybe the shift forks got mixed up when you put the transmission back together?

If you hold the rear wheel with the foot brake does it still try to turn and eventually bind up or does it 'break loose' and allow you to turn the clutch?
