Better pull that shaft assembly and do the dremal back-cut on the gear dogs. Engagement isn't much and the slight wear on edge of dogs isn't much. If you have gear engagement, but jumps/ratchets under a load.............better fix while its apart.......otherwise you WILL be doing this again.81H Venturer1100 "The Bentley" (on steroids) 97 Yamaha YZ250(age reducer) 92 Honda ST1100 "Twisty"(touring rocket) Age is relative to the number of seconds counted 'airing' out an 85ft. table-top.

TC Gresham has a pictorial step by step procedure written up in the repairs section under transmissions. It is so good it is almost fool proof. I used it when I did mine a couple of years ago.

My bike is still upside down, so this stuff is still kind of fresh. My bike was occasionally popping out of first gear and had just started to slip out of second. By looking at the dogs, I wouldn't notice anything wrong if I didn't know exactly what to look for.
I chose to replace the gears with new ones and I performed the "washer move". Unfortunately, due to my schedule it will be the end of next month before I can complete the job.Marty (in Mississippi)

more questions about trans
I want to thank all that have replied. Now one more question....going by the manual and by the pictures of the trans on this site the trans and the shift drum all appear to be right for neutral, but with the clutch drum in place clutches not bolted down tight, there is limited movement of the rear wheel. No more than a few inches forward or back. it seems like it is in gear. What the h#^^ is the deal ? Thanks again for any help. If i can't fix it i will be selling parts !

Az-XsRider, maybe the shift forks got mixed up when you put the transmission back together?
If you hold the rear wheel with the foot brake does it still try to turn and eventually bind up or does it 'break loose' and allow you to turn the clutch?-- Scott
