thanks Phil, I was hoping to get just the inner cable or whatever you call it but will get the one you pointed out if I cant find another. I did not lube the other and paid the price. I tried a 650 off a parts bike but it was about two inches short.82 XJ 1100

If you just need just the inner cable, go to auto parts store "help" section and get a universal cut to length replacement inner cable. It will work just fine, i've done it to XS cables, should also work for the XJ.2H7 (79) owned since '89

Mike's XS speedo cables won't work. They're all to short and no XS650 has a leading axle. Cross that option off the list.
If you have the Yamaha part number, you may be able to source one from www.yamahasportscenter.com Their prices are as good or better than anybody else.Marty (in Mississippi)

Yea, napa has them as well. One end is already square, you measure, cut, and install the other end yourself. Done it many times in the past when cars still had speedo cables'78 E "Stormbringer"

NAPA, Autozone, O'Reillys, Advanced Auto, etc. should all have 1/8" diameter speedo cable replacements. There are around $5 to $10 and you simply cut them to length, crimp on the end (using the supplied "tool"), lube and go. Just make sure the inner liner of your cable housing is in good shape, or get the motion pro complete cable instead.-- Clint

Just replaced the core with an universal speedo cable from Autozone. It worked fine. There was enough cable to do two XS repairs, but unfortunately only one little crimp-on-end. I might be able to reuse the crimped part if the cable breaks again but I would still have to grind the "flats" onto one end of the remaining cable.
$9...
The generic Motion Pro speedo cable that I picked up from the local bike shop last time was about 3" longer than the one on my Special. I reused the original speedo cable this time with the new core. Neater..
