  • I have a Gas Tank leak

OK, a couple of weeks ago the ol Special started leakin gas.... Well, I'm lazy so didn't get to look at it until yesterday.. Well, after taking the gas tank off I found out it's leaking from the "low fuel sensor" area under the gas tank. More specifically around the little rubber grommet around the electrical wireing... So does anyone have a part number for this right off hand? Or at least what the "official" name for this is? Or where to get one?

I assume my best bet is to just replace the whole fuel sensor piece and call it good?

    Thanks for any suggestions.

Is it coming through the area that the wire connections come through plate, or around the plate where it blots to the tank?

It's leaking through where the wire comes through the plate. I didn't unbolt anyting else as I still had gas in the tank.

Could always try brazing the crack closed. Or you could just replace the sending unit. either works.

That is a "sending unit", and is no longer available, as far as I remember. If you don't want to worry about the light, you can make a steel plate to replace the sending unit. If you run the tank down most of the way, you should not even have to totally drain it.
Re-use the rubber gasket and paint the cover on the outside so it will not rust.

Hey thanks for the info guys.

I really like the assurance of having the low fuel light working, so I'll probably try my luck with a used unit. (now that I know what it's called )

              Off to eBay I go!

              Thanks again.

                  Hi Dan,
"low fuel sensor" is good enough that anyone who has one knows what you mean.
You can't buy new ones. Look in the list's "XS11 parts for sale" forum. The most likely source there is Andreas Weiss.
Or swap to a Standard tank, it's at least a gallon bigger.
