Cylinder Honing

I am going to have to buy a ball hone so I can rering this beast. Anyone have any suggestions for appropriate hone grit to use? Or any advice for doing the actual honing itself?

I did a search and found the manufacturer of the ball hones site, took a while to find it, but I found this page:

And at the bottom is a PDF file/book they have to help determine what grit and such you would want to use. I didn't D/L it or look at it, but looks like they have lots of info there!

hi nate,
im in the process of doing the same thing,
u can also use a honing stone,
the main thing is getting a good cross hatch,
keeping the hone moving up and down,
and getting rid of all the glaze in the cylinders.
let us know how u go.

This is what I use. Stones are replaceable with your grit of choice, and the flat stones will show up any pitting or imperfections in the bore better than a ball hone will.

what grit have u been using with it?
is the 280 to course?

the only thing to be careful about using these
is not to go to far past the bottom of the cylinders
other wise the thing expands and can go to pieces.

I have straight stone hones but have never been able to get a cross hatch with them. Ball hones are pretty fool proof.

What are the xs cylinder sleeves made of?

ive never used the ball type before,
with the stones u need to consistently keep
moving them up and down.

the sleeves are steel.

u putting new standard rings in nate?
ive bought the .25 over size rings from ebay that
ill file down the end gaps.

.25 over is what I got. Last summer I was buring oil at about 1-1.5 quart every 50-100 miles so I pulled the jugs and gave a quick hone with my straight stones (i mostly only ever use them for a rough first hone so I dont care about cross hatch, cause I can't ever get.it anyways) and put her back together. Didn't really solve the oil problem and I actually lost.some compression from that. So now its a more thorough and proper job this time.

been spending more on oil than fuel atm.

It's almost like driving a special, they have to stop for gas every 100 or so miles, and I had to stop for oil......oil is more expensive though

i was running 70n weight oil for
old worn out engines, that was better,
but still worked out expensive as it was
more than twice the price of the cheaper stuff.

Yeah I went to 80/90 for awhile just to see what would happen and it was still burning, just a little slower.

Anyone have any thoughts on a 73mm 240 grit silicon carbide hone?

I suppose we would need to know the composition of the steel in our cylinders, if we follow the flex hone chart.
