  • Lower steering bearing seal #

    My seal was trashed so I don't have a number to reference. Anyone know what it is?

    The factory seal is integral with the lower bearing, IIRC. If you order an All Balls bearing kit ($30), it comes with the upper and the lower seal, which is non-integral with the bearing, it just gets slipped on the stem below the new bearing. If you can find a new seal, bad news is you will probably trash the old bearing removing it to install the new seal. HTH

      Have the old bearing off and it is fine. The seal was trashed before I started taking the bearing off in the first place though otherwise I would have left it alone.

      And just as a question, is there supposed to be a seal on top?

        Yes, there is a top one too. Funny, the 81SH I just took apart had the lower seal attached to the lower bearing. Maybe it was just fused on there after 30 years. I might have an extra lower seal hanging around for you, gotta check it's condition though.

        The fiche doesn't show any seperate seal which is why I thought it was integral with the factory bearing. Some aftermarket kits contain seperate upper and lower seals.

          At this point, you're better off just replacing the whole set.

            It's funny, I've run into these both with and without the seal. The bearings with the seal had the same number except for a 'S' at the end, so yeah, it is integral to the bearing.

            And I've never seen a seal on the top bearing; there's a tin 'dust cover' (which seems to be typical of any bike) to keep keep the worst stuff out, but that's all. Most lower neck bearings I've run into have either another tin 'shield' like the top one, or nothing at all.

              Maybe I will just send a message to an ebay seller and ask him what the numbers on his bearings and seals and say I just want to make sure they are right before I buy

                If you can't find one, give a holler and you can have this one, it's like new.

                  If you find one with seal on both sides will have a 2rs at the end of the number.

                    Hey Phil could you measure the inside hole diameter and the total outside diameter of that seal you have? the upper bearing is #32005 and the lower bearing is #32006 so I am just curious if maybe that is a upper seal.

                      Hole Diameter: 26MM

                      Outer Diameter: 48MM

                      Thickness: 3.5MM

                      I double checked the P/N just to make sure and it is CY-32005X

                      Now you got me thinking, maybe the seal I have here is an upper.

                        Yeah thats gotta be an upper seal. The lower bearing is ID 30mm and OD 55mm

                          So to continue my thought process, maybe I could just order a CY-32006JR which from looking at the ClarkSeal website does match up to those lower measurements?

                            Nate, I looked thru my parts box again and found the larger lower seal.

                            ID: 30MM

                            OD: 55MM

                            No number on this one though. It's in rough shape.

                              Ok, here is another wrench in the mix. In the triple tree there is a raised portion that the bearing seats down on, and I am assuming the seal would mount around. That has a diameter of 40mm though, so if in fact the seal goes around that then the id would need to be 40mm and the od would still need to be 55mm
