What is the brake pad of choice these days? Long life is not desired, I just want good brakes.

There's basically two choices among the various brands; organic or metallic (aka 'sintered'). Organic will have generally slightly shorter life, are easier on the rotors in terms of wear, work better cold but will fade under heavy use faster than metallic. Organic is less likely to give you brake squeal also.
Metallic is better under heavy braking once warmed up, can be noisier, and can wear the rotors faster. It generally costs more too.
Truthfully, there's not a huge difference between them and your riding style will have a lot to do with how happy you are with a given type. If you like to do a lot of high-speed corner-carving, metallic will probably be the better choice. I think Vesrah is the only major maker still listing metallic pads for these bikes (EBC did also at one time, but all I can find now are kevlar organic), but you may find some in other brands if you look around.
You have a 'standard', so there's a few more choices. I'll also mention that Yamaha fitted 'front' and 'rear' pads originally to the standards, but these are long-discontinued and now the pads are the same front/rear.Last edited by crazy steve; 01-30-2011, 02:15 PM.Fast, Cheap, Reliable... I ran EBC for years. Decided to try Vesrah cause they were a bit cheaper. Developed a brake squeal that would make you go blind. Nothing I did would make it go away for long. Went back to EBC and everything is good.When a 10 isn't enough, get a 11. 80g HardbaggerComment
