does anyone know for sure, positively, 100% if the cams from an 78xs1100 e are the same as the cams from the 79 special? interchangeable?

The '78-79 camshafts (both standard and special) are supposed to be identical, according to all available info (published specs, part numbers, etc). I'm not aware of anybody having an issue with interchanging these.
The later cams are nearly identical, having less duration and overlap but slightly more lift on the exhaust valves. These will slightly reduce power if swapped for the early cams.Fast, Cheap, Reliable... Pick any two

yep the 78 and 79 cams are the same,
was just comparing the early model cams to the later
ones and noticed the holes for the oil gallery are slightly
larger in the later cams.pete
