  • Tear them down and build them up

After all my picking, prodding, twisting and other things... I've gotten my bike to where I want it, mechanically speaking. Now it's time to make it look how I want it. so this is what it looks like now.

Right now I'm figuring out paint colors and what I want to do with what. My main problem right now is with the exhaust and what I can do to dress it up a bit. Any ideas guys?

If your exhaust is in good condition get it "Jet Coated" or ceramic coated same thing. It will last much longer than paint and it doesn't burn off. It's expensive but well worth it. You can get a chrome colour , black , silver .

      I likey what you did
Im always a little jealous of people with the mechanical ability to tear down the bike and put it back together
I could probably tear it down, its the putting back together that hinders me
I think you could have the megaphone powdercoated but pretty sure the header has to be painted with heat resistant paint

As Tinman stated...best and longest lasting option is the ceramic /jethot coating.

A less expensive and less long term option is VHT paint. You can simly wait till your near the end of the project, paint it, mount it, and ride it to "cure" the paint.

          Nurse that exhaust!

Whatever you do, nurse that exhaust. They are starting to get scarce and expensive. Sending it out to places like JetHot will get pricey but they will do it right and it is worth the money in the long run. They will blast it with the correct media, treat the exposed metal and coat it with the right finishes both inside and out (and yes, Virginia, coating the inside is very important). You will get cooler exterior header temperatures too. I have applied coatings like this myself in my home shop but it is a real chore and you have to like doing finishing like this. You need blasting equipment, spray paint equipment, an oven that will fit your parts and if you are going with the chrome-like finish, a vibratory polisher (or a whole bunch of elbow grease) to do it all correctly.

Not to change the subject but I would give particular attention to your wire harness. Check out and clean all the connectors and replace any that need it. It is not hard to take it one section at a time and remove all the OEM tape and inspect the wiring and then re-tape it. Or if you want to make it a bit more modern, several sizes of heat shrink tube will do the trick, especially on those sections that go up to the headlight. Taking some time here will elimate a bunch of gremlins for you later on.

Just a rough estimate/ballpark figure, what does it cost to have exhaust ceramic or jet coated?

Www.jet-hot.com or most local powder craters do ceramic as well.

It's been a while since I last checked, but I would guess $2-300 for a used header. New headers are much cheaper as there's little cleaning prep involved. And depending on what kind of packing is inside the muffler they may or may not be able to coat that unless the packing is removable.

But given the cost of any kind of decent exhaust for these bikes, if yours is solid but just 'cosmetically challenged', this is a very viable alternative...

                  Ceramic coating in Ont. Cda

Hey Guys: I just found a place in Ont. Cda. back in Nov. Called fireballcoatings.com & got a quote from them for my 4 into one Bassani exhaust for $225 & that included courier shipping that they pay both ways & very little wait time. & that was the whole system including the exhaust in flat or shiny black or chrome type. As you guys stated, something to think about. - Dan

I've located a guy in my area (north florida) who does ceramic coating and says it should be around $150 but he also hasn't seen the header and said that the price can change a lot depending on size/condition of the piece. there are a few flat spots on the bottom of these headers but they are really in pretty good shape.

I'm thinking of adding a piece to the exhaust to move the position of the muffler but am wondering what that will do to my tuning/jetting if anything.

                      What is a virginia coating?

I just put my wiring harness, engine and brakes back on the newly painted bike. I'm hooking up the coils and was wondering which coil goes to what cylinders Orange 1-4, Gery 2-3 or the other way around?

And if you get it wrong it will pop out the carbs and not start DAMHIKIJD.

I'm pretty sure mine are actually backwards, but switching the primary side made it work, at least until I pull them off and either replace the whole thing or replace the wires.

here are some pics of my progress. I painted the frame red, stripped the engine and coated it with an aluminum VHT paint.
