I've got a friend working on them right now. he does this for a living and is amazing with an airbrush. I decided to go with something simple so I'm having him do a 2 tone black top tank and fender with red sides and silver pinstripes. I think we're going to make the side covers black also but that could change. the black on the top will meet up with the seat nicely and the silver pinstripes should give it a bit more character. I'll post pics when I get them back on monday.79 XS1100 Special

I am now at the last step of this re-conditioning and am working on the carbs. They are the older 78-79 style, I am having two problems.
1. When I let go of the throttle the exhaust pops. I'm assuming that is because I am running a bit rich. I have 4-1 exhaust and pods I'm running 147.5 mains and my slide needles are on the middle notch. I am thinking about dropping the slide needles one notch to see if that helps as that should lean them out a bit right?
2. I had a broken idle needle stuck in the #2 carb and the only way I could remove it was by drilling it out (I tried so many things) now the hole is 1/16th instead of 1/32nd how would you recommend I fill or adjust that back to the proper size? Or is it too much trouble as it does work I just have to tighten that screw all the way in.79 XS1100 Special

Popping on decel usually means a lean idle mixture. Try turning the screws in a half a turn. You can try adjusting the needles but I have found the center position is always the best, YMMV. You should be fine with the enlarged hole for the pilot screw, it just might be a bit more sensitive adjusting. I've had to shorten the spring a little to get the screw to go in further on one of my bikes. HTH2H7 (79) owned since '89

Yep, looks great so far. I like it!
If you still have the stock 42.5 pilot jets, go up one notch to #45's and re-tune/sync your carbs. That should cure your popping problem. If you are up to 147.5's on the mains you should be up one notch on the pilots anyway.Mike Giroir

Once you un-can a can of worms, the only way to re-can them is with a bigger can.

ok so I'm down to tuning it and I've got a charging problem. the four wire connector coming from the generator had melted and two of the connectors needed to be replaced. With that done I ran it for about 10 min and then it shuts off because the battery doesn't have enough charge to maintain the ignition module. After about an hour on a slow charger it's ready to start again and will repeat the earlier performance. Ideas?79 XS1100 Special
