Don't remember where I got them, but I have a set of little bits that fit into my driver (your know, the multi screwdriver things) that have the special Jap ends on them. I got them for working on (of all things) yamaha pianos, which also use the strange heads, but if your screwdriver fits properly, they don't strip out.

Well, I would love to have a few more sets lying around so I could find them easier when I need them.

Pozidriv bits also work well I believe. Home depot has a bit kit with some that work well. The link I posted was just the first google I found for reference.

            Hi Elevener,
the difference between JIS and Phillips is the difference between hopeless and pathetic.

Hey fred, if hopeless is stripping screws and pathetic is not using the right tool while doing so.....then I agree.

Yamaha used a form of threadlock on the screws that hold the body onto the rails. I found that heat was the only hing that helped the impact driver loosen the screws. I STILL rounded three when I was trying to split up a bank of carbs.

I have decided to replace these all with allen bolts... But am having issues with that too... local parts store said they are not metric, or sae thread... Should I not believe them, and find them out of town, or would it be easier to drill out the holes a touch bigger, and re-tap them with a standard Metric thread? Or are they just full of it, stupid, and didn't want to deal with some 20-cent order when there was a guy in line next to me making a $300 000 dollar pipeline order?

Yes, don't believe them, yes, they're stupid. These are all standard metric threads and you should be able to get these anyplace that has decent stock. If I recall correctly, the tops/float bowls are 4mm, and the body-to-rack screws are 6mm. I replaced all of them with allen on mine...

If you want SS, it is cheaper to get the kits off ebay than most hardware stores. I have also used boltdepot.com.

Personally, I prefer the un-phillips screws that came stock, over allen heads for the carbs. I have stripped out more allen heads on this bike than anything else. I have one craftsman screwdriver that works perfectly on the JIS heads, and only occasionally need a tap with a hammer on the handle to break them loose.

Just pricing out the metric socket head cap screws and I have found them in stainless for 40 bucks (comes in packs of 100 of each) and in chrome for 40 bucks knurled, or 75 bucks with a smooth polished finish on the outside(Both crome ones you pay by the screw)... There is a nuts and bolts distributor in the next town (2 hours up the road) and they went to my Dads welding shop, and said he had them... I will call in the A.M. for pricing... I searched From Edmonton Ab. to Prince George BC. over 3 weeks, and no one carries them because they are all oriented towards oil and gas, and have lost touch with automotive parts. The only automotive costom stores around here do audio, or truck work, and mostly on domestic diesels... not alot for bikes, or anything small... Pretty much, 1/2 ton trucks are the ''economic'' vehicles, because they only burn 22L./100Km lol... getting off track...

so anyhow, let me know what you thing of the prices... they are coming from the states so I will be paying duties, and mad shipping too...

Check out ebay, there is a seller there who sells them in a kit for our carbs...assuming your looking for carbs screws....for something around $16 for the set for our carbs.
