You can use XS11 carbs, only major difference is manual choke lever, no cable operated choke. Sorry, "fuel enrichment lever".

The XJ carbs aren't quite the same; you have a handlebar mounted choke lever which the earlier bikes lack. Their lever is on the left side carb. Somebody else will have to weigh in on whether or not you could swap parts and 'convert' a early set. It may be possible on a '80-81 set, but I doubt it on the '78-79 versions as there's too many differences in the carb body casting.

If you don't care about that, any XS carb set will work.

What screws did you strip out? Was it the mounting screws or things like the pilot jets and idle mixture screws? I have had great success with using a dremel cutting wheel to cut big flat head notches in stripped out phillips screws. And with the acquisition of a large drill press, really great results using Fred's recommendation from a long time back to check driver bits in it and use the press to put lots of force against the screw and turn the chuck by hand or with some channel locks.

If its just those screws you could probably just grab them with a visegrip and turn them out.

I have to do that right now on quite a few of the crappy rusty phillips screws that are scattered throughout the bike as i tear mine apart.

                      Hi Kronk,
if the carb screw heads have gone all cone-shaped there's ways to get those screws out, some of them posted here.
Then you can put Allen screws in their place like they should have done at the factory.
If the threads in the carb. bodies are stripped, you are in the soft and brown.
Same kinda deal with your upstairs toilet, eh?
I do hope it's the clean water inlet that failed.

On my buddies KZ (which used the big 6mm phillips all over the engine) I had lots of good results cutting in flat head notches and using the big flathead bit that comes in the little impact driver set. Oh, and don't forget the BFH to use with it

Rule no 1 of carb work on these bikes, spray EVERY thing with liquid wrench, or PB Blaster BEFORE trying to loosen it. Rule no 2, when rule no 1 does not work, get out the dremmel. I've lost count of how many of those bleeding phillips head screws I've rounded out and used a dremmel with a cutoff wheel in it to cut slots and used a flat head screw driver to remove them.

As to the toilet thing, well....once again the rule is proven, it all rolls down hill. The other two rules of plumbing...payday is on Friday...and do NOT bite your finger nails!!
