As I've mentioned before on this forum.... I've had four XS1100's and done about 120,000 miles on them (put together). One was brand new, the other three had between 30 and 40 thousand miles on the clock. One of the used ones, I ran with nitrous oxide on for a year.
I've never had any of my XS11's ever jump out of gear.
As I've wondered before... what percentage of bikes suffers from this problem? I mean... how many XS1100 bikes were actually manufactured? How many have suffered the gear problem? etc.
I think there is a fair amount of abuse involved in knocking out second gear. Also second gear is the most likely to fail in any bike. It's pretty rare to see some other gear fail first.

Geezer
Actually, the XJ's had the problem with 1st gear more than 2nd. Mine started in 3rd, and ended up being with ALL the gears.

I used to think there was something wrong with the transmission on the old Mongrel. It would pop out of first on take off if I had to feather the clutch a lot like when putting around a parking lot. Then I found all other XS11's I've ridden since do the same thing. I think it has something to do with how I ride. So now I just hold down the lever until I'm up and rolling and now no problem...
Geezer, ya must of rode a bunch of "bad" first gear XS's as that is NOT normal. And surely you know holding the lever down resting foot on it does nada..........

I don't think so. It's more like it vibrates out of gear into neutral like the neutral detent is weak. When I take off normal like from a stoplight, I can crack it wide open without popping out of gear.
Like I said before, I think it's my on/off the clutch riding style at a walking pace that I think causes it to wander out of gear. If first were really bad, holding the lever down wouldn't do sh*t like you said....
