Actually, the XJ's had the problem with 1st gear more than 2nd. Mine started in 3rd, and ended up being with ALL the gears.1980 XS850SG - Sold

I used to think there was something wrong with the transmission on the old Mongrel. It would pop out of first on take off if I had to feather the clutch a lot like when putting around a parking lot. Then I found all other XS11's I've ridden since do the same thing. I think it has something to do with how I ride. So now I just hold down the lever until I'm up and rolling and now no problem...

Geezer, ya must of rode a bunch of "bad" first gear XS's as that is NOT normal. And surely you know holding the lever down resting foot on it does nada..........81H Venturer1100 "The Bentley" (on steroids) 97 Yamaha YZ250(age reducer) 92 Honda ST1100 "Twisty"(touring rocket) Age is relative to the number of seconds counted 'airing' out an 85ft. table-top.Comment

Like I said before, I think it's my on/off the clutch riding style at a walking pace that I think causes it to wander out of gear. If first were really bad, holding the lever down wouldn't do sh*t like you said....
