If it were me, I'd simply take a piece of mosquito netting type material and wrap it over the end and hold in place with a clamp or a tye wrap. All your really trying to do is keep the critters out.

Yeah, don't use a gas filter; as soon as they get oil-soaked, they don't pass air too well... BTDT.

Maybe a small pill bottle with some small holes drilled in it and some stainless steelwool? Guys used to use 35mm film canisters, but you don't see many of those anymore...

If you go to autozone or advanced go down the universal v8 and ricer isle... they have very small k and n tpy breather filters for about 9 bucks or so. This will work fine and look good!!

Yes indeed, the jetting is something that apparently has to be dealt with. I've been asking and searching for info on what others have found helpful and though I'm still looking, the dynojet Stage 1 kit sounds about right. I would always like a little more power but I don't want to loose MPG. If I can keep stock MPG and have more power available if I wish, that would be ideal. I don't want to burn up the valves or pistons by being too lean either. Need a nice working balance.

What might work well would be one of those with a bit of copper brillo pad in it, nothing to flake off and get into the engine & no rusting; it would be a good barrier to bugs and a clear passage for venting and any oil fouling.

Maybe someone has a better & cheaper idea?

I have used these "crankcase" breathers extensively on my smaller bike builds when bore up kits have been added. With smaller cases and more compression, if no breather is added, you start springing oil leaks around gaskets. Let me know if you need some assistance, and I can point you in the right direction on where to find them. Very popular in the custom mini bike builds along with oil coolers.

Just putting in my two cents, I used an old 90 deg. spark plug boot with a dab of rtv to hold it in place with a pod style breather filter for my crankcase vent. I don't have any other vents on my XJ11.
